Context

The European Master for High Performance Computing (EUMaster4HPC) aims to develop a new and innovative European Master programme focusing on high performance solutions. EUMaster4HPC brings together major players in HPC education in Europe and mobilises them to unify existing programmes into a common European curriculum.

Workshops-2

During the academic year 2025-2026, there are two cohorts of students: a cohort in the first year of the Master’s programme (Cohort IV) and a cohort in the second year (Cohort III). These students are distributed among eight awarding universities: University of Luxembourg, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, Università della Svizzera Italiana, Politecnico di Milano, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and Sorbonne Université.

The students of both cohorts, Year 1 and Year 2, will attend high-quality workshops, organised locally, during the academic year 2025-2026.

Workshop facts

  • Duration: 1 to 2 days
  • Period: September 25 – January 26
  • Budget: 100 €/EUMaster4HPC student
  • Number of students: About 50 per workshop (EUMaster4HPC students + HPC local Students)
  • Localisation: in a selected university or supercomputing centre or research centre
  • Workshop format, to extend the scope to the whole third and fourth cohort of EUMaster4HPC students:
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Workshop Topic(s) for Year 2 students: Topics will be chosen among new technologies and challenges like IA exploitation for HPC enhancement, optimisation of new architectures, algorithms for exascale challenge, scientific & financial applications etc.

Role of organising institution

Set-up of a high quality programme:

  • Identify a relevant topic
  • Find and partner with local companies, selected universities, supercomputing centres and research centres
  • Identify and invite excellent lecturers with relevant positions in the HPC field
  • Ensure logistics:
    • Coordination of the whole event
    • Provide a suitable location, lunch and coffee breaks
    • Management of trainers and speakers
    • Management of students
    • Recording of interventions and/or providing equipment for a hybrid workshop

Collaboration between partners (participating universities and/or external associated partners of EUMaster4HPC like universities, supercomputing/research centres and industry) is highly encouraged.

Opportunity for companies and supercomputing/research centres

  • Create connections and attract talents.
  • Interact with world-class level teachers and researchers.
  • Exchange with students on critical HPC topics.
  • Present their company and activities.

Specific requirements for the workshops

The workshops will bring together key players from academia, research and industry who will present some of their current activities and/or interests in the field of HPC.
They will allow students to broaden their knowledge and thinking on either an important topic or career opportunities in HPC technology and research.
The programme should include industry presentations, expert lectures, case studies and group reflective work.

The organising institution is expected to either organise a hybrid format or record the presentations made during the workshop and share them on a dedicated portal so that students from all awarding universities can benefit and participate remotely. The organising institution should publish an announcement on the workshop with the specific features, in collaboration with the Communication group of EUMaster4HPC.

The organising institution will deliver a certificate of attendance to the participating students. A workshop certificate is proof of up-to-date skills in specific areas and it allows students to feel engaged, motivated and confident.

Budget

  • EUMaster4HPC has a dedicated budget for the organisation of the workshop and will reimburse incurred expenses up to a limit of 100 €/EUMaster4HPC program student.
  • The organising institution engages to provide a workshop on a non-profit basis.
  • Proponents should submit a detailed global budget as well as the cost per participant.
