Overview
We are looking for mentors to guide the students of the EUMaster4HPC during the student challenge 2024-2025.
Students will work with QMeCha a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) package. The objective of the challenge is the benchmarking of the code, and the development of regression tests.
In this challenge, students will have the chance to
- Benchmark a real world application in one of the EuroHPC systems,
- Gain practical experience in software engineering techniques such as regression testing, and
- Develop project management and team working skill that are crucial for their careers.
Context of the challenge
- 39 EUMaster4HPC students in 10 teams. Students are all in cohort II (master 2 students)
- 1 supervisor : Georgios KAFANAS (UniLu)
- 10 mentors : each mentor follows two teams
What is mentoring?
The mentor provides technical support, so must be well-versed in HPC and related programming.
The mentor will provide guidance in terms of project management and solving technical issues, based on their experience. Mentors should help the students organise complete their work on time, but the students should be ultimately responsible for organising and distributing their work.
Mentor profiles
Mentors who are working on the development of software for HPC systems. Ideally mentors should have hands-on experience with HPC, and should be able to help the students with not only technical questions but also with project management and team-building skills.
Required background: Experience with scientific software development, software bench-marking, and numerical linear algebra. Knowledge of Monte Carlo methods and numerical methods is a plus. Industrial experience is highly valued.
Skills: Good communication, and experience working on large software projects and managing teams. HPC technical skills can also be useful. We don’t want the mentor to contribute to the design or development effort directly, just to provide guidance based on their experience.
Time commitment: About 1h per week per team. This will involve communicating over emails, and 1 meeting per team every 2 weeks to follow the team’s progress.
Calendar: 10 weeks starting on 10 September 2024
