Context

The European Master in High Performance Computing (EUMaster4HPC) aims to develop an innovative European Master’s programme focused on high-performance computing solutions. EUMaster4HPC brings together key players in HPC education across Europe, mobilising them to consolidate existing programmes into a unified European curriculum.

The third cohort of EUMaster4HPC students began their studies in September 2024 at the eight awarding universities: Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, Sorbonne Université, Università della Svizzera italiana, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Politecnico di Milano, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski.

All students are required to complete a challenge during the third semester (between September 2025 and February 2026) before embarking on their internship. The challenge involves solving an industrial or scientific problem using HPC, working in groups of three to four students. At the end of the challenge, students must submit a report and defend their work before a panel of judges

Specifications and requirements

Period and Topics of the Challenges

The subjects for the challenges will be presented during the EUMaster4HPC Summer School 2025.
The challenges will take place during the third semester, from September 2024 to late January 2025.
The defence will be scheduled according to a common timetable for the participating universities.

Composition of Teams

The teams will be multi-institutional. Team assignments will be made following the kick-off meeting, where the topic will be presented by the challenge organisers and supervisors.

Mentorship

Each team will be assigned one mentor. Academic mentors will provide guidance on design choices and assist with any technical issues outside the scope of the project.

Academic Requirements for the Programme

The challenge will involve the completion of a significant project with strong conceptual and scientific content. It will complement the problem-solving skills students have developed throughout the EUMaster4HPC programme, as well as their ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
Challenges will be supported by companies or researchers.

Description of the Challenge

The challenge proposal must include the following:

  • A description of the topic, including references and a brief overview of the context
  • A description of the expected outcomes from the challenge
  • A list of available resources (e.g., source codes, models)
  • The biography of the business mentor and the expected expertise of the academic mentor
  • A proposed schedule
  • A detailed explanation of the alignment between the difficulty and scope of the topic and the work achievable by a group of three to four students over four months, with a significant level of autonomy (40 hours of work per student for the realisation, and 10 hours for the defence)

Please note that students must complete the challenge within approximately 15 weeks. Mentors should dedicate between 2 to 4 hours per week to work with the students.
