In a landmark achievement for Europe’s high-performance computing ambitions, the EUMaster4HPC consortium celebrated the graduation of its inaugural cohort of students at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) on 11 October 2024. This momentous event marks a pivotal step in the development of skilled HPC professionals essential for maintaining the continent’s competitiveness in digital innovation.
The first cohort completed a demanding two-year programme funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking with a €7 million budget. EUMaster4HPC is the first pan-European Master’s programme dedicated to high-performance computing. It includes eight prestigious universities and over 100 partners from 23 EuroHPC countries. This collaboration equips graduates with advanced skills for the evolving HPC landscape.
The graduation ceremony highlighted the accomplishments of these pioneering students. It underscored their significance as future leaders in the field. Throughout their studies, they engaged with cutting-edge HPC knowledge. They specialised in areas such as system architecture, performance analysis, and algorithm optimisation. Their education has prepared them to tackle complex computational challenges, making them valuable assets in academia and in industry.
This cohort gained hands-on experience through ties with the European HPC ecosystem. They participated in internships, workshops, and collaborative challenges. These activities bridged the gap between theory and practice. Events like the EuroHPC Summits, the ISC High Performance or the ETP4HPC Conferences provided invaluable networking opportunities. Graduates connected directly with leaders in the HPC community and gained industry insights.
The EUMaster4HPC programme emphasises international mobility, enriching graduates’ educational experiences. Each student studied in multiple countries, adapting to various research environments. In their first year, they attended one of eight prestigious universities across Europe. In their second year, they studied at one of seven other universities aligned with their specialisation. This exposure broadened their academic horizons and fostered a globally minded cohort.
Anders Jensen, Executive Director of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, celebrated this graduating class during the ceremony. He remarked, “The graduation of this first cohort marks a moment of immense pride for the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, and I eagerly look forward to attending many more graduation ceremonies in the years ahead. A world-class supercomputing ecosystem in Europe is impossible without talented, highly skilled professionals like you. You are the future of European supercomputing and our greatest asset!”
These graduates’ achievements reflect their dedication and the collective efforts of over 100 academic and industry partners. They are committed to nurturing HPC talent in Europe.
As graduates begin their careers, they are poised to contribute significantly to the HPC field. They possess the skills to tackle complex computational problems in various aera, including scientific research and industrial innovation. Their success marks a new era for European high-performance computing. They are ready to address challenges facing both academia and industry.
Graduates of the EUMaster4HPC programme are not just entering the job market. They are emerging as catalysts for change, driving innovation, and contributing to a digitally empowered Europe.
